The universe puts us in places where we’re meant to be, often in the presence of our greatest teachers.
Animal rescue rarely begins with a plan.
More often, it begins with a moment. A visit to a shelter. A single dog that needs help. A decision to do something instead of walking away.
For Hilary Rosen, that moment happened in Los Angeles more than a decade ago.
After moving to Los Angeles for college, Hilary built a life surrounded by dogs, running a dog care business and spending her days working with animals across the city. Rescue was not part of the plan.
Then one day she received a message asking if someone could check on a dog at a nearby shelter.
She decided to go.
Walking through the kennels for the first time was overwhelming. Within weeks she had pulled her first dog and helped find it a home.
That moment eventually led to the creation of A Purposeful Rescue.
Building a Foster Based Rescue
A Purposeful Rescue operates as a foster based organization, meaning every dog pulled from a shelter is placed into a temporary home rather than a physical facility.
Once a dog leaves the shelter, the process begins. Veterinary care, behavioral support, and time to decompress in a home environment.
Fosters play a critical role in this process. They help dogs establish routines, learn structure, and reveal their personalities so that the rescue can find the right permanent placement.
Rescue becomes the bridge between the shelter and a forever home.
The Reality of Rescue
Rescue work is often misunderstood.
Many people imagine playing with dogs all day. In reality it is constant coordination. Phone calls, group messages, veterinary appointments, transport logistics, and difficult decisions about which dogs can be taken and which ones must wait.
Hilary describes rescue work as something closer to being an air traffic controller, constantly navigating moving pieces and urgent situations.
There are moments of joy and moments of heartbreak.
But there are also the transformations. The dogs who arrive scared or sick and eventually leave confident and loved.

The organization has helped thousands of dogs find homes across Los Angeles and beyond.
